air-borneHey there. I'm Sara, nineteen years old, and currently in the DEP for the Air Force. I will be working toward the job of Airborne Cryptologic Linguist. :) Currently, I live alongside the beautiful beaches of Florida but I've also called New York City home. The love of my life is a Marine & we're currently engaged (yay!).

“can you describe what's it's like coming into the cryptologic linguist position? basically your process and why you made your decision. this year i'm going into my senior year of high school and i'm in a total toss up as to what i'm going to do with my self and i wanted some advice from first hand experience. good luck in all your air force endeavors!”

Thanks so much! :) My recruiter suggested the job for me & I was interested because I’ve always wanted to learn a new language. I really wasn’t all that sure what the job entailed until way later. So anyway, I went off to MEPS and had to stay there for three days. The first day, I took the ASVAB; the minimum score you need is around a 72 I believe to be eligible for USAF linguist positions. The next day I had to go through all the medical screenings (which sucked!). One other person there was disqualified from the linguist position because they apparently bombed the hearing portion of the tests they give you. The final day there, I took the DLAB (Defense Language Aptitude Battery). I really didn’t know what to expect. All I knew was that it was a test given to guage your ability to quickly pick up a new language. There’s no way to really prepare for it, but I did do some linguistic puzzles I found online prior to going to MEPS. Having a good grasp on grammar will also help you out with the test. You have to score a 100 or higher on the DLAB to become a linguist for the Air Force. I left the testing room thinking I failed horribly, but I actually did really well! Because of the high score I made, I knew right then & there it was what I was supposed to be doing. I made Airborne Linguist my first job choice and a couple months later, I was informed I got the job. I have researched the job a lot ever since, but I can’t really say from experience what the job’s actually going to be like. I know the training is extensive & really difficult with a high fail rate. Basically, you are immersed in whatever language you are given (which is based on how well you scored on your DLAB). I’ve also got a lot of additional training because I’m an Airborne linguist, but you can also go for working on the ground. To be completely honest, I’m stoked about doing this. The majority of your training will be in beautiful Monterey, CA & you can go all around the world with this job. And once you’re out of the Air Force, it is likely you will be able to use your skills learned in the civilian world which was really important to me. :) Whew! Hope this helped you a little bit & if you have anymore questions just let me know.

Just read an article announcing the end of the Betsey Johnson brand! :( Some of my favorite things have come from this store. Possibly the only upside to this story is the blowout sales that are going to happen.
